Export and Import Bookmarks/Favorites - Internet Explorer

To export the Favorites folder, follow these steps:


  1. In Internet Explorer, click ‘Favorites’, click the down-arrow next to ‘Add to Favorites’, and then click ‘Import and Export’.
  2. Click ‘Export to a file’, and then click ‘Next’.
  3. Click to select the ‘Favorites’, and then click ‘Next’.
  4. Select the Favorites folder that you want to export. If you want to export all Favorites, select the top level Favorites folder. Otherwise, select the individual folder that you want to export.
  5. Click ‘Next’.
    By default, Internet Explorer creates a Bookmark.htm file in your Documents folder. In the case of needing to backup Favorite/Bookmarks for a Windows 10 upgrade you will need to use the ‘Browse...’ button to browse out to your Google Drive File Stream or an external drive/flash drive to save the file there. 
  6. Click ‘Export’.
  7. Click ‘Finish’.

To import the Favorites to Internet Explorer:


  1. In Internet Explorer, click ‘Favorites’, click the down-arrow next to ‘Add to Favorites’, and then click ‘Import and Export’.
  2. Click ‘Import from a file’, and then click ‘Next’.
  3. Click to select the ‘Favorites’ check box, and then click ‘Next’.
  4. Use the ‘Browse...’ button to browse out to the location where you saved your bookmarks. Select the bookmarks file you saved when exporting your favorites/bookmarks.
  5. Select the folder where you want to put the imported bookmarks. Usually just the top ‘Favorites’ folder. Then click ‘Import
  6. Click Finish.

  • In the Export Bookmarks File window that opens, choose a location to save the file, which is named bookmarks.html by default. If you are doing this in terms of a Windows 10 upgrade navigate to your Google drive file stream or an external flash drive/hard drive and save the bookmark backup there.
  • Click the ‘Save’ button. The Export Bookmarks File window will close.
  • Close the Library window.

  • Within the Import Bookmarks File window that opens, navigate to the bookmarks HTML file you are importing and select the file.
  • Click the ‘Open’ button. The Import Bookmarks File window will close.
  • Close the Library window.

  • The bookmarks in the selected HTML file will be added to your Firefox bookmarks within the Bookmarks Menu directory.




    1. Click the three dots button in the top right of the Chrome browser. Hover over ‘Bookmarks’ and then click ‘Bookmarks Manager’. Alternatively type or copy chrome://bookmarks into your url and hit enter.
    2. On the bookmarks manager page. Click the three dots button just below the previous one you clicked. This is the button that is in the top right of the bookmarks manager page not the top right of the Chrome browser. Select ‘Export Bookmarks’.
    3. In the case of needing to backup Favorite/Bookmarks because of a Windows 10 upgrade you will need to export the bookmarks file to your Google Drive File Stream or an external drive/flash drive. Navigate to where you want to save the bookmarks file and click ‘’Save’. 


    To import Bookmarks to Chrome:

    1. Click the three dots button in the top right of the Chrome browser. Hover over ‘Bookmarks’ and then click ‘Bookmarks Manager’. Alternatively type or copy chrome://bookmarks into your url and hit enter.
    2. On the bookmarks manager page. Click the three dots button just below the previous one you clicked. This is the button that is in the top right of the bookmarks manager page not the top right of the Chrome browser. Select ‘Import Bookmarks’.
    3. Navigate to where you saved your exported bookmarks file, select it, and click ‘Open’.
    4. This will create an ‘Imported’ folder in the bookmarks manager containing all of the imported bookmarks. From there you can move the bookmarks out of the imported folder and into the normal bookmarks folder.
