Troubleshoot Audio/Video Issues in Zoom Meetings

This document covers some of the most common issues with Zoom reported to Technology Services. Please follow these links to learn more about: Scheduling Zoom meetings, Hosting Zoom meetings or our Recommended Audio and Video settings.

Issue: No one can hear me (Host Audio):

  1. Make sure you successfully joined your audio by clicking the Join Audio If you have successfully joined your audio, check that you are not muted by clicking on the Microphone icon .
    1. If you have joined the audio and your audio isn’t muted, make sure you have the correct microphone selected by pushing the up arrow next to the microphone and choose from one of your available options. (These options will vary depending on your specific setup).
    2. If you are in the classroom using a Lapel, make sure you have turned the lapel on and chosen the USB Audio Codec microphone option.
  2. Participant: check that you have the correct speaker option chosen for your setup, that your speakers are turned up, and that the computer is not muted.
  3. If you are still having trouble please contact Technology Services.

Issue - Can not hear Participant Audio:

  1. The most common issue is the participant has not joined their audio. Instruct them to click on the Join Audio icon at the bottom left of their Zoom application .
  2. Host: check that you have the correct speaker option chosen for your setup, that your speakers are turned up, and that the computer is not muted.
    1. In the classroom, don’t forget that the audio is not at 100% until the control panel has a blinking red light.

Issue - High pitched speaking:

  1. There have been several instances where an individual sounds high pitched or fast. This is related to the computer having too many background processes running. 
    1. If the Host hears the Participant like a chipmunk, the participant should close any application(s) they have running that they do not need for the meeting. 
    2. If the Participant hears the Host like a chipmunk, the Host should close any application(s) they have running that they do not need for the meeting. 
  2. If this continues to be an issue, please contact Technology Services to review your computer settings.

Section 4: No one can see me (Host or Participant Video): 

  1. At the bottom left corner of the Zoom app, click the up arrow on the Camera icon to choose from all available Video source options on your system (These options will vary depending on your specific setup).

    1. If this icon has a red line through it like this: your video has been stopped. Click on this icon to reactivate your video stream.

Section 5: My video is mirrored (Words are backwards):

  1. If you find your video is mirrored (words are backwards), click the up arrow next to the Camera icon, and go to “Video Settings”. The menu that opens had an option to “Mirror my video”.
