Has my account been compromised or "Hacked"?

Here are some ways to check your account for possible signs of having been hacked:

  1. Check to see if you can still log in to the account
    • If you are unable to log in:
      • If you can't get into the account, using an alternate email account, send a copy or photo of your MWSU ID (or a picture ID) and your G number to helpdesk@missouriwestern.edu.
        • Once it has been received we will then reset your account and reply back with instructions on how to activate it again.
          • This will change your password for all MWSU logins.
          • Fast thinking and fast acting is your best bet for getting through this situation unscathed. However, you may not have been alerted to the problem until it was already too late. If the hacker has already changed your secondary address and/or your secret question you will have to start dealing with Google directly and prepare to fill out a form.

  • Secure your account by changing your password.
    • Go to www.missouriwestern.edu and scroll down to the bottom, click Goldlink on the right side, then click on Forgot Password .
    • Sign in with your username and G number, answer one of your security questions and then create a new password.
    • Your password must be at least 8 characters and have at least 3 of the following: uppercase letter, lowercase letter, number or special character. It also CANNOT have any part of your name in it.

2. Once you have gained access to your Gmail account, go to the settings menu by selecting the ‘Settings’ icon - which is in the upper-right corner of the screen and go to your email’s settings.
  • Check your ‘Signature’ file - which is under the ‘General’ settings tab.
  • Check your ‘Send mail as’ file - which is under the ‘Accounts’ setting tab.
  • Check your ‘Forwarding address’ file - which is under the ‘Forwarding and POP/IMAP’ setting tab.
  • Check your ‘Sent’ emails for any messages that which you did not send.
